Farm Visit: Kiwing Foods
Wednesday, February 25, 2009 22:48
On the same day that a tour of Shanghai Organics, we also took a trip to Kiwing Fine Foods, a family owned farm.
Greated by Denise, General Manager, we learned that the farm is relatively knew (less than a year old) and that they are in the process of applying for their organic status. A process that takes 3 years.
According to Denise, the original reason for purchasing the land was to start a farm that would cater to their friends and family, however with 500 MU of land it was clear that so much more was possible.
Currently developing their site for retail and direct to consumer, Kiwing to date has succeed in entering the restaurant and hotel end of the business.
the first thing we saw on the tour, and perhaps the most interesting area of the farm, was the chicken coups where 3000 chickens were running around free range (see picture above).. and unlike Shanghai Organics who purchase fertilizer, Kiwing is using the chicken poo as fertilizer. A fact we confirmed when walking into a freshly tracked greenhouse (hello AMMONIA!)
Still in their first year, a lot of the 160 greenhouses are being planned, and a lot of the future peach and pear trees are only waste high, however it is clear that in the spring.. and in the years to come, the farm will be a great place to be.
