Industry Ecology: an evolving field
Friday, February 27, 2009 15:18The Yale School of Forestry – founded at a time when forestry was at the forefront of sustainability debates – hasn’t updated its name, but has quietly morphed into a dynamic research hub for folks working on all matter of resource issues.
Last week I spoke with YSF’s Marian Chertow about “industrial ecology”— an emerging field that tracts the flows of energy, water and other materials through manufacturing systems on various scales (industrial parks, municipalities, countries, etc.).
You can find a fascinating podcast featuring Chertow, “Why Waste Waste?”, here.
Much of her research focuses on Hawaii – islands make for convenient systems to study – but she’s also worked with industrial parks in China and India. I’ll aim to post more from our discussion soon.
