What Have You Done To Improve Your Environment?

Has anything you done improved your life?

Watching America History X, there is a scene where Ed Norton ( lead character) is asked ( while lying on a gerney in prison ) if anything he had done had improved his life.

He was being asked this at the movie’s transition point for Norton, who came to realize his path was the wrong one. That, in blaming others (culture and races) for the wrongs he saw,  and acting out ,it wasn’t until being asked that question that he fully realized his actions were actually more destructive to ‘his cause’

… And why could possibly be the connection between the conversion of a racist and the ‘green movement’?

It’s simple.

In my opinion, we are spending way too much time and effort in trying to assign the blame for the problems “we” face, and far too little time focused on executing solutions. Environmentalists blame politicians and business leaders. Politicians blame other politicians. Scientists blame carbon…

It’s a series of circular arguments that at times allow for a leader to ‘emerge’ from the packs, when at the same time creating the conditions where nothing is improving.

So, perhaps it is time where we begin acting collectively in the interests o the collective and begin asking ourselves what we have done to improve our lives.

Are we as citizens going to continue the process whereby we  blame politicians and corporations for failing to protect our environment and economies…. While we drive to Starbucks for our next latte?

Or will we begin a process whereby we accept that we ourselves have a personal commitment to our surrounding community, to the environment, and to the economy which we are in direct contact with.
